Spring is here in Washington! The tulips aren't up yet, but they will be very soon! In the meantime, let's get into another round of Quilt Block Mania. This month I'm sharing a Foundation Paper Piecing pattern for a "Mod Tulip" block and I also have a technology tip for you.
First, the pattern! The theme for this month is "Flowers" and here is the color palette.
I decided to raid my stash for my sample block:
Here is the PDF download for you, enjoy!
Now, I want to share a technology tip with you. Have you ever used the Layout for Instagram app in your quilting? It can be very helpful for quilt layouts with repetitive blocks or for sampler quilts such as those you can create with your varied Quilt Block Mania blocks.
Let me show you how it works. First, download the "Layout For Instagram" app. It's free and it looks like this:
Next, take a picture of your block using the "square" or "1:1" aspect ratio. Zoom in as close as possible, like this:
Next, open the "Layout for Instagram" app on your device and select the photo of your block. Then, at the top of your screen you can choose a layout. There is a 2 x 2 or 3 x 3 grid option if you scroll almost all the way to the right. I start by selecting the 2 x 2 layout like this:
Once you have selected the 2 x 2 layout, add borders and then save your new photo:
Now that you have a 2 x 2 grid of your block, go back and start over. Select the 2 x 2 photo that you just created and put it into a new 2 x 2 or 3 x 3 layout and begin to see how your block would look in a whole quilt:
I use this app all the time in my quilting. It's great for analyzing color and choosing quilt layouts.
If you sew up a "Mod Tulip" block please share on social media with #bhqmodtulip and remember that I'm always available if you have questions!
